Aerodynamics

PDFPrintE-mail

VIPER has the ability to perform advanced aerodynamic testing using the Langley Full-Scale Tunnel and upcoming rolling road tunnel along with on-track validation. The wind tunnels are located at Langley Air Force base in Langley, Virginia and provide a wide range of services for full-scale and large-scale aerodynamic testing and research support to address a diversity of aerospace and surface vehicle applications. On-track validation of wind tunnel data may performed at VIR using either data acquisition systems already installed on-car or our 16-channels of pressure sensors system (expandable) available at the track.

ODU has access to the NASA 14 by 22 wind tunnel for automotive testing and is in the process of installing a single-belt rolling road system that will create the ‘worlds fastest’ rolling road wind tunnel. The belt is 2.4m by 7.0m (see picture below) and can accommodate a wide variety of vehicles.

On-track testing

VIPER operates an advanced data acquisition system that can be fitted to customer cars to allow on-track testing of vehicle aerodynamics. This easily-expandable system has 16 channels of pressure transducers that can be installed to test vehicle aerodynamics.
